61' Buddy Davis Convertible 1987
Legendary Carolina boat builder, Buddy Davis, learned boat building from the hardcore charter boat captains of the famed Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, who fished the notoriously rough waters of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, heading out the Oregon Inlet with its treacherously shifting shoals. And as a boat captain himself, he developed the exaggerated high flared bow with knife-sharp entry, wide foredeck, and shallow draft that became known as the “Carolina-style.” Features designed to take on rough head seas and track well in following seas were paramount, according to renowned naval architect, Donald Blount, who worked with Davis on the iconic design of the BD61, which is considered by many to be one of the best Carolina sportfish boats of all time.
Besides the signature bow flare, the nearly flat sheerline with curved break where cabin meets cockpit that is echoed by the side windows’ and the flybridge sides’ aft curves, are distinctively Buddy Davis features. Buddy Davis, who was greatly influenced by the Florida custom builders, Rybovich and Merritt, known for their exquisite interior woodwork, brought yacht-quality finishes to the Carolina fishing boats, an innovative feature at that time. In the mid-80s when Buddy Davis switched from cold-molded construction to fiberglass composite molds, he offered fishermen the opportunity to outfit the boat as they required, making each BD61 a semi-custom sportfish boat. The 1987 “KAHUNA,” with 3 stateroom/3 head layout, has been extensively refit and upgraded to contemporary décor, softgoods, appliances, electronics, twin 800hp CAT C18 diesels, SeaKeeper 16 gyrostabilizer, and much more, for today’s tournament angler or a family offshore cruise.
