General Information

The Mao Ta 36 had its roots in the Robert Perry designed Hans Christian 34, which was modified to become the Hans Christian 36 and the Union 36.

Willie Ma was working at Union Shipyards when he contacted Robert Perry to make a modification to the Union 36. Willie took the designs and started his own shipyard at Kaohsiung, Taiwan called Mao Ta Lumber and Yacht.

The design change was a keel modification sometimes referred to as the "Brewer Bite".

The construction of the hull is one-piece solid Fiberglass laminated that was hand laid. The chain plates and keel were re-enforced. The cast-iron ballast is securely molded into the keel.

Interior Layout

Heading down the companionway you will notice the beautiful cherry trimmed interior. The bright airy atmosphere is complimented  by the butterfly hatches located mid salon. “Alborada” does not have a built-in air conditioner, but the owner has a portable unit, with the baffles and cover, that fits securely into one wing of the butterfly hatch.

The “U” shape galley, located to the port side has a double deep stainless steel sink unit, a three-burner propane stove/oven and an Adler-Barbour 12V fridge/freezer - easily powered by the solar/wind generator units.

There are three protected sea berths for passage-making. There is space for seven people to sleep (assuming they brought nothing more than a toothbrush).

The starboard side has the chart table with a quarter berth located behind it.

Moving forward there is a lounge bench with a pilot berth located above it. The port side has a full settee, the owner is a blue water, long distance sailor and have made modification, that when needed, will create a secure sea berth, for a peaceful rest on a long voyage.

Heading forward towards the V berth you will pass the marine head. It has a 50-gallon holding tank.

This boat is perfect of a couple that is looking at spending a great deal of time on the water

The engine compartment is located behind the staircase of the companionway. The vessel was repowered in 2001 with a 56hp -Yamar 4JH3E engine and has a fuel capacity of 100 gallons. Since 2019 the heat exchange ,engine mounts, coupler and cutlass bearing have been replaced. The engine has 4771 hours on it.

There is a propane sniffer pressure water and a two way water heater.

Electronics and Electricals

The navigational electronics include:

Garmin 564 color chart plotter , Raymarine radar with “Sea Talk”, Horizon VHF radio with a extension cockpit microphone. The chartplotter and radar units are mounted on a  hinged bracket that allows viewing in the cockpit and below deck.

The electrical system consists of:

30 amp shore power – with 3 power cables

2 solar panels, Silent Wind – wind generator feeding into a master controller that regulate the voltage going into the 6 – 6V house batteries. There is also a 12V starting battery.

Magnum battery charger/ inverter

Ground Tackle, Rigging and Sails

The ground tackle consists of:

Ideal 12V windlass

55lb – Delta anchor with 200’ of chain

35lb – CQR with 50’ of chain – 200’ of line rode

35’ – Danforth

The rigging is estimated at being at least 10 years old and has been regularly inspected.

The sails consist of:

 Mainsail -three reef points

130% furling Genoa

Cutter – Stay Sail

The sails are in good condition.

Deck and Safety

The deck is solid fiberglass. The bimini and dodger are in exceptionally good condition. There  are both clear and opaque side curtains. The running rigging is in good shape.

There is a crane for raising a dinghy engine with holder on deck for it.

Still certified Viking 6 man life raft, man over board life ring and a "ditch bag" The boat has jack lines for rough sailing.

Broker Note

This boat was designed for blue water sailing and can easily be ready to undertake a major passage. The owner has had the boat for 30 years and all the equipment needed for a journey is included.

It is a dry boat and with its deep cockpit, canoe shape hull with a full keel displacement it is a very safe cutter to sail. The owner, a long distance sailor, has made it down from the Great Lakes and has sailed the Bahamas and Caribbean islands. It just might be the right time for you to venture out and live the dream.
