Description

This YouTube star (see: Sailing VINYASA) is fresh out of a mini yard period and is as turnkey as a cruising boat can be. The sellers have recently added to their ‘fleet’ (family) and as such are changing tacks with their plans. VINYASA is a 2-owner boat (which previously spent New England winters in a shed) and is one of the few 409’s which was ordered with the desirable 3-cabin / 2-head interior layout. The original owner splurged with all the options, and the current owners subsequently spoiled her further with many practical and expensive upgrades to cruise in luxurious comfort and safety. If you’re looking for a boat which is truly equipped and prepared to sail offshore to exotic islands the day of closing then VINYASA is a must-see! At this price she won’t last long on the market, especially given the shortage of available listings in this size/price category.

MEDIA REVIEWS

Sail-World

“The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409 has just won the prestigious European Yacht of the Year in the prime category of 'family cruiser'. Eleven sailing journalists from disparate organizations test sailed the contenders, and the winner was announced at the recent Dusseldorf Boat Show, aka BOOT. To win the award it had to beat some other high-flying names to make it to the top spot on the podium - the Bavaria Cruiser 45, the Beneteau Oceanis 58, the Comet 26, and the Hanse 445. The panel assesses performance, comfort, construction quality, price-performance ratio, design and unique selling features.

So what makes her special amongst such competition? This yacht replaces the 39i, of which more than 1,000 were built, so it started from a pretty firm base, and the innovation starts from there. Mostly the changes are smart details, but the biggest departure from the 39i is the fact that the 409 has a hard chine running from about midships aft, fairly high on the topsides. This is meant to give more interior volume in the aft cabin, and extra stability when sailing. Designer Philippe Briand and the Jeanneau design team have given a lot of thought to the cockpit layout. With short-handed sailing growing ever more popular, all the sail handling lines and winches are laid out within easy reach of the person on the helm. This means that the 409 can be easily sailed without by the ever-growing band of cruising couples.”

Cruising World

“The 409 puts a host of innovative details on a relatively conventional platform—with just one exception. While the hull’s basic dimensions are consistent with a typical modern cruising boat, the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409 has a hard chine running from about amidships aft. Having gone many years without seeing a single crease in the hull of a new composite boat, we were surprised in this year’s new-boat fleet to find three, all from Groupe Beneteau. Compared with that of the Beneteau First 30 and the Beneteau Sense 50, the hard chine of the 409 occurs higher in the topsides, where it will confer more interior volume in the aft cabin and extra form stability under sail.

Immediately noticeable under sail is the refined thinking that Philippe Briand and the Jeanneau Sailboats Design Team have invested in the deck layout. It wasn’t very long ago that BOTY judges were lamenting the way that work stations were scattered all across the cockpits of new boats, from the coamings to the cabin tops, making it difficult to sail shorthanded. No more. On the 409, as well as on many other of this year’s fleet, we were happy to see sail handling lines and winches laid out within easy reach of the helm.”

Sailing Magazine

“As Steve and I were putting the 409 through its paces, our first observation was how easily the boat was handled by two people. We immediately felt at home on the boat, which is a sign of a great design. It's a small thing, but being able to trim the main from the helm is a big step in making a cruising boat more user-friendly. Hard on the wind we maintained speed inside of 40 degrees apparent. Not surprisingly, the 409 seemed to like reaching best. With winds ranging between 12 to 15 knots, we hit 7.5 knots on a sweet beam reach. Several powerboat wakes gave us the chance to see how the 409 handled a chop, and I was impressed as she sliced through the man-made waves without pounding. She did lose momentum, but then accelerated rapidly.

The Jeanneau 409 pushes the right buttons. It is comfortable, sails well, and is designed for easy maintenance while using the latest technologies. It is well built, and backed up by the largest part of the largest sailboat manufacturer in the world. And it's affordable. No wonder Jeanneau is selling boats.”
