GENERAL DISCRIPTION

The Moody 38 is a fast, comfortable center cockpit yacht with a performance hull designed by Bill Dixon. She has a long waterline for fast passage times across the full range of conditions. She is stable and quite stiff under sail thanks to a well balanced sail plan and a bulb keel. She is also easily sailed by two people. All principal sail controls are led to the cockpit including the roller furling main sail.

As comfort goes she is in a class of her own. She offers a high degree of privacy for a 38' vessel. This is created by the center cockpit layout, with the V-berth forward, luxurious main saloon, galley and head in between and the owners stateroom being full beam and aft providing for a large space separation. The galley is well equipped and easy to work in while under way.

HULL and DECK

Hull and deck are hand laid fiberglass construction with isopthatic gelcoat backed by initial layup of mat and isopthatic resin. Hull above the waterline are balsa cored sandwich construction providing less weight above the waterline and greater stiffness. The hull is stiffened by bonding in frames, stringers and bulkheads in conjunction with the interior moldings. Deck areas with molded in limit slip finish for safety. The deck is also stiffened with the use of balsa core and has a raised bulwork with a teak cap to provide extra safety when going forward. The shoal draft keel with a flattened bulb provides the same center of gravity as the deep keel. The bottom has recently been barrier coated and bottom painted. The rudder is a GRP blade hung unit.

Welcome to my little part of the marine industry. Let’s see how I may be of help to you. My name is John Heffner (Jack) and I have been in the marine industry since 1984 when I moved to Rock Hall, Maryland, to work for Gratitude Yachting Center. I entered the boating industry after leaving a career in HVAC, plumbing and electrical design with a consulting engineering firm in Pennsylvania. I joined the staff at Gratitude Yachting Center working as a rigger and systems installer for 10 years. I became a partner and have worked in most aspects of the business from installer, service manager, sales of both new and used boats, and the liaison with several of the boat manufacturers that we sold. For the past 40 years, I have been around and understand the characteristics and construction of many types of boats and have worked with builders of boats from England, Finland, France, Spain and the United States.
